IN THE BEGINNING Tackle Football on Vancouver Island has existed in one form or another since the 1960's. During this period of time community football was the sole method for organizing the sport. Vancouver Island Community Football has gone through periods of growth and contraction over the past four decades. It has generated a lot of "home grown" football tradition, coaches and personalities. The community footall scene has introduced football to the major communities on Vancouver Island and provided a vehicle for coaches and players to develop their game. In 1996 football on Vancouver Island evolved. 1996 January - MT. Douglas H.S.(Victoria) Adopts Highschool Football. H. Coach Roy Vollinger.
1997 February-Coach Steve Koehler assumes leadership of the Mt. Douglas Program. 1998 January-Timberline H.S.( Campbell River) Adopts Highschool Football. H. Coach Jason Krowitz.
1999 January-Mt. Douglas moves to AAA Conference.
2000 January-Ballenas H.S.(Parksville) Adopts Highschool Football, H. Coach Chris Martino.
2001 January-Cowichan H.S.(Duncan) Adopts Highschool Football, H. Coach Phil Slater.
December: Ballenas Varsity Squad loses BC AA Championship to Windsor HS. 2002 January: Nanaimo District starts varsity squad. January: Cowichan starts Junior Varsity swuad. January: Coach John Hugi becomes HC of Varsity Program. December: Ballenas Varsity squad wins AA BC Championship. 2003 January: Mt. Douglas HS starts JV team. Al Cochrane HC January: G.P Vanier and Mark Isfield HS (Courtenay) begin HS programs at Varsity level under guidance of Coach Sean Toal. January: Ballenas HS adds JV Program. January: Gulf Islands (Saltspring Isle) starts JV squad under coach John Foley. January: Alberni District HS starts JV Program. Dean Williams HC February: First annual VanIsle Mega Clinic held in Nanaimo, BC 2004 January: Mark Isfield and G.P. Vanier add JV programs. 2005 January: Cowichan and Alberni District fold their football programs. January: Highlands HS adds JV squad under coach Dale Kuzma. January: Gulf Islands adds Varsity squad. 2006 January: Highlands HS adds Varsity squad. January: Belmont HS (Victoria) adds JV squad. 2007 January: Alberni District re-starts program with JV squad. January: Belmont HS adds Varsity squad. 2008 Gulf Islands forms 9-12 squad along with Alberni District. Mark Isfeld and G.P Vanier Join them at Varsity Level as a art of BCSSFA's fledgling Tier 2 Single A league. A playoff vs the Northern Interior champs is set to go in November. Parklands (Sydney BC) forms JV and Varsity squads for AA play in the Fall. E.J. Milne (Sooke) also joins at the AA JV level. The Future High school football on Vancouver Island is set to grow even more in the coming years. As of July 2008, several Victoria area schools have ndicated that they will be entering play at the JV AA level of play in 09. The most limiting factor concerning growth is the availability of teacher-coaches.
